Add this to your marketing PR or something
Yes, we are kicking some butt in China! Now, if we can get more developers in other areas as well…
Well i can tell you that in where im in the world it is very problematic.
Although i do try my best to market cocos it is seams like very hard task
Unity spoiled every one . they have great tools for amateur/junior developers and they have very good documentations.
And tutorials and very active form .
From business side i can understand them(the game company’s ) unity developers are much cheaper then c++ game developers.
And you must be c++ game developer to use this engine to over come all the bugs ,
The speed of developing in Unity is way faster then cocos thanks to the editor.
And they are really support many platforms out of the box.
And unity is free …
This is big problem for cocos to grew out side of china …
There are two sorts of developers:
One who cares for editors and tools, and the other, who cares for the engine.
E.g. UE or Cryengine. The engines offer a lot of functionality, beside having a rather good/bad editor and tools. Many developers just use the engine because of their purpose and functionality, not the provided tools, and derive their own. UE even dropped Unreal Script in favor of C++.
I think it’s just a matter of your target audience. Is it amateurs or professionals? Unity is targeting users, who want to get their foot into mobile development easily, making a first mobile game as a hobby and not necessarily to make a living. Using a good editor for that purpose is easier than to dig into a programming language or some engine internals.
Besides all that, Unity runs a massive marketing machinery, which Chukong does not.
@IQD
Unity is used massively by company’s which some of them making million’s.
its not only amateurs not at all from business point of view it pays off way better then cocos.
i want cocos to survive as free successful open source engine i really do . and i try to do my part .
As not used by companies making millions also.
The companies in the top tiers are not using Unity at all.
The engine is not making you money, the game is.
Companies are using Unity, because you don’t need programming skills to pull of a game. The toolset just allows that.
I’m not saying it’s used by amateurs exclusively, but the Unity audience are amateurs and professionals with tight budgets. The developed their customer base, when the alternatives where not dirty cheap.
The advantage of Unity is, that they provide services, cocos2d-x don’t. E.g. support hotline, SLAs, an asset store, IAP and analytics and much more.
People still have this thinking in their head: if it’s free, it can’t deliver.
There are also companies out there, which don’t like Open Source.
You also right , i was not talking about AAA games but more about mobile studios .
The wired thing is as c++ developer and really into cocos internals .
i think that Unity just made every thing right .from software architecture and business side
they balanced between engine (not prefect but good ) vs editor vs platform support vs price vs community.
they keep every body happy in the mobile developers community.
