I’m new to the Cocos2dx framework, my only background has been Basic language. Currently, I’m using another Game Engine which is Gamesalad, which is not bad, however, I’m looking to gain knowledge in coding, so in the near future, I would like to make the switch. As of right know, I’m undecided between Cocos2dx and Unity3d, one being C # and the other being C++, so I have some questions for the Cocos2dx community, and would love any insights or opinions. I’m looking towards my future needs regarding game development ( 2d, 3d, VR )
How hard is C++? Is it more structured than C # , any issues regarding performance ( ex: memory leaks, etc…), size of package ( game project ).
Will Cocos 2dx offer in the near future export to .exe, and support for VR ( Virtual Reality ) games?
Will Cocos 2dx offer a universal editor, where a user can export to ios / android, etc… without being required to open Xcode or Eclipse? I understand that there’s Cocos editor, but it’s still relatively new…
If a universal editor is implemented, will it offer Live Preview ( like when your coding, your seeing on Live Preview, the result of the code )?
Will Cocos2dx be always open source?
Any insights or opinions will be appreciated. Thank you and have a nice day…
C++ is harder than C#. Probably C++ is one of the most difficult languages to master, but you don’t need to be a “master” in order to create a game.
You have to be careful while managing memory. In cocos2d-x we use the retain/release model… so if you use it, you should be Ok.
Size package is smaller than C#.
Of course you can use JS or Lua if C++ is too low-level.
Yes. Actually we have an internal demo… not ready for public yet. Once it is ready we are going to publish it.
Cocos Studio requires Xcode (or VS)… we are working on an improved version that we plan to announce it on March. I won’t require Xcode / or VS, but it initially it will only work with scripting (no C++).
This new editor has a preview button… Not sure what is the exact definition of “Live Preview”.
Yes, I think C++ is the biggest user base of cocos2dx. And yes, C++ will be supported somewhere in the future. But I do not exactly when. That’s @walzer 's call.
