I have a completed cocos2d-iphone game. I’m looking to port to Android. I’ve heard good things about Lua, but I’m struggling to find out what the current state of Lua support is in cocos2d-x. I’ve downloaded the cocos2d-x package and followed the installation instructions. cpp-tests is building successfully. I’ve looked around for the IDE called Code but it looks like that is no longer the best choice. I’ve seen forum posts that suggest I should download the cocos package and that will include Cocos Studio which supports Lua development. Is that right? Is that what people use? Should I delete what I’ve already downloaded?
I also cannot find Lua API documentation, only C++ JS. It makes me wonder whether Lua is a serious option.
Thanks slackmoehrle. Hadn’t realised the API Ref included Lua. That’s handy.
Shame to have to go back to a text editor and comand-line build, though. One thing nice about working with cocos2d-iphone was that Xcode wrote 90% of my code: I’d type a few characters and Xcode would guess the rest usually correctly.
And what about debugging. Is there anything that will step through the Lau code and or the cocos2d-x library C++ code?
A bit confused that you say I could try Cocos Creator: is that not just for JS development? Are you saying I might be better off using JS?
Are there definite plans to updarte the Cocos package to c3.11? Would that mean that Cocos Studio, although EOL’d, will be usuable with v3.11?
You can use Xcode to edit and compile your Lua, C++ or JavaScript project. I think most use a text editor since it is a bit more intuitive for JavaScript and Lua than Xcode.
I think you can place breakpoints for Lua in Xcode. I’m not 100% positive here.
Maybe, up to you. Creator is have Lua and C++ added to it.
There are not definite plans to upgrade Cocos to v3.11. We are discussing it.
Nope, Studio is tied to v3.10. I don’t even know if it works at all with v3.11.
Ah, great. Also, as I mostly develop on Windows, I’m experimenting with VS 2013. I seem to be able to build with that too, but I cannot see the lua files listed within the project. Mac development is less convenient for me, but I could use Xcode if that is a better choice for Lua.
But not in VS2013?
Oh excellent news: any approximate ETA?
Oh okay. I guess there is no point given the plan to extend Creator
