About deltaTime of update

In this page, there is an explanation of update, but its argument, deltaTime, is not explained.
What does deltaTime mean?

deltaTime, such as in one second, the game will show 60 times(fps), so deltaTime is 1/60 = 0.0166.

deltaTime means the time elapsed between the two update calls.
