Well not quit open source Although they give the source code .
but still good alternative to Unity3d

This looks really cool, seems like it’s based off CryEngine. I’d be nervous if I were Unity/Unreal, this engine could very well eat their lunch.
That’s interesting.
I am curious to see whether and how this will affect the development of cocos2d.
I totally agree with your topic.
It’s an even harder hit, as the CryEngine deal was around a tenth of the cocos2d-x deal.
Exactly. Amazon completely bought CryEngine from Crytek and saved the company.
I think that does not change things dramatically. Unreal still will be the biggest contender to CryEngine and the new competitor.
Unreal ask for 5% of profits , this something that many developers doesn’t want to give .
this engine doesn’t , but it restrict you to use Amazon for back-end , but then again
most of the big MMO games using Amazon.
Sure, but as Amazon posted, they make money from their AWS service. Someone could also argue, that using AWS is not cheap. It’s just their business model. It’s also interesting to see, how this announcement will change the revenue approach of UE.
Speaking of profits in percentages. Look at how many profits Apple, Google, Valve or <please fill in your favorite platform holder> is taking ![]()
Why would it affect development at all?
Why they doesn’t want to give ?
I was thinking about the 3D engine in cocos2d: I still have not tried it out, but from what I have read online over time it seems to be at an early stage if compared to other engines. What I thought was that maybe having another (probably) big competitor on the market of 3D game engines might steer the cocos2d development away from it, or lower its priority. What do you think about it?
We will continue to add the features that make sense for a game engine. I don’t see us stopping 3D development.
Well as i see it for now it will be good competitor to unreal and unity
for 2d Cocos2d-x is still number 1 today.
@iQD
This is exactly the point after everybody take their cut , you want to minimize your revenue share .
And you do have alternatives all the time especially in the open source world .
but again it all depends on many factors.
And in this Cocos2d-x shines . but im not sure how much revenue it dose with its openness to continue be supported .
I guess you meant MAXIMIZE your revenue share!?
Of course. You also have alternatives to cut the revenues of Apple, Google or whatever. So why not cut the 30-40% instead oif the 5% ![]()
cocos2d-x has a revenue of zero.
IIRC Cocos is generating revenue or AnySDK.
There is a thread on the forum, where the team explains how they make money. Unfortunately I can’t remember the topic.
Technically not true. We bring in money, just not by charging our developers for using the engine ![]()
Thanks for the clarification, but technically cocos2d-x makes no revenue in the sense of a pure engine used by a developer, as you already said: you do not charge developers. Are there any other instances how cocos2d-x can be used besides a developer? I can only think of the projects in the thread, but these are services of/on top of cocos2d-x, or taking some license fees for non developers.
I guess it depends on how you interpret what cocos2d-x is in it’s entity.
Found the thread: http://discuss.cocos2d-x.org/t/discuss-the-next-step-of-cocos2d-x/21182
indeed, lots of them…
Which are? I’m not talking about tools using it.
So please give me some insights
Yes, I’m not talking about tools using it either
Let me make sure I am allowed to communicate in detail or if I have to do it from a high level.
The suspense is killing me
Thank you for sharing anything about it! I appreciate your time and willingness to share!
I’m really curious how a team behind a free Open Source project, in this case cocos2d-x, handles things regarding revenues of something provided for free.
I’m just familiar with companies like RH, which build an ecosystem (e.g. support and integration) around the project itself.
You don’t say…
